Rwanda Icon Awards Launch With 58 Categories Across Music and Entertainment
A new Rwandan awards platform, Rwanda Icon Awards, has officially launched with plans to recognise achievements across music, film, digital content, media, fashion and sport.
The first edition will feature 58 award categories, including several focused specifically on Rwanda's music industry.
Music Gets a Major Share of the Categories
The announced music categories include:
- Artist of the Year
- Song of the Year
- Album of the Year
- Music Video of the Year
- Hip-Hop Artist of the Year
- R&B Artist of the Year
- Gospel Artist of the Year
- New Artist of the Year
- Afrobeat Artist of the Year
- Producer of the Year
- DJ of the Year
The structure gives the awards broad coverage across both artists and the professionals working behind the scenes.
Launched on September 25
Rwanda Icon Awards was launched on September 25, 2026.
Organisers describe the platform as an initiative intended to recognise outstanding work while also creating space for emerging talent alongside already established names.
Executive Director Ben Rurangirwa, known in Rwanda's film industry, said the awards are designed around recognition and appreciation for people who have made strong contributions during the year.
Beyond Music
The 58 categories extend well beyond music.
Film categories include awards for actors, actresses, films, series and production.
Digital and media categories include Content/TikTok Creator of the Year, YouTube Channel of the Year, Best Podcast and Journalist of the Year.
Fashion and sport are also represented, with organisers planning recognition across football, basketball, volleyball and other disciplines.
Nominees and Voting Details Still to Come
The organisers have not yet announced the nominees.
Voting procedures and the date of the awards ceremony are also expected to be revealed later.
That means no nominee list, voting result or ceremony date should currently be treated as confirmed.
A New Entry in Rwanda's Awards Landscape
The launch adds another platform to Rwanda's growing creative-industry awards ecosystem.
For musicians, the wide range of categories could provide recognition beyond the biggest mainstream names, particularly if the organisers follow through on their stated intention to include emerging artists.
The next major step will be the release of the official nominees and voting process.
Editor's Note: Rwanda Icon Awards' launch, 58-category structure and announced music categories were independently reported by UMUSEKE and Isimbi on September 26, 2026. Nominees, voting procedures and the ceremony date had not yet been announced at the time of publication.
